Integrated sand management extends ESP run life and reduces workover frequency

Challenge

A major operator in the Bakken was experiencing frequent ESP failures due to sand fallback during shutdown periods. Sand was settling on pump stages, creating hard-start scenarios that overstressed motors and accelerated pump wear. Average ESP run life fell significantly below target, resulting in costly workovers and lost production.

Solution

PetroQuip deployed an integrated sand management system combining SandMaze and SandStorm-E. SandStorm-E separated sand from produced fluid before reaching the ESP, while SandMaze captured sand fallback during shutdowns. The self-cleaning design allowed captured sand to safely re-enter the production stream upon restart without aggressive jetting.
